"Reading is the key to the world"
After the first consultation, I give all my patients a list of recommended books on the subject of alcohol. Here I present my personal favorites. I have read all of the books or listened to them as audio books. The books/audio books are informative, easy to understand, entertaining and without raising a moral finger. Everyone will find something here!
Daniel Schreiber - Sober: About Drinking and Happiness
This is my absolute favorite book. It is incredibly informative, profound, gets to the point and the language is so beautiful. If you have to choose one book, choose this one. I read it over and over again and each time I learn something new. Also available as an audio book.
Gaby Guzek - Alcohol Adé
This book convinced me. It is medically sound, easy to understand and explains the mechanisms behind addiction. It shows how alcohol disrupts brain chemistry and how the right nutrients can support us on the path to abstinence.
William Porter - Alcohol Explained
William Porter delivers one aha moment after another. He explains complex connections in a way that everyone can understand. And he does so in a scientifically sound manner. Also available in English and as an audio book.
Nathalie Stüben - Without Alcohol - The Best Decision of My Life
Nathalie Stüben is one of the best-known personalities on social media when it comes to alcohol. She has made it her mission to bring the topic to the forefront of society. On her YouTube channel "Faces of Addiction" she offers a platform for a wide variety of people and their stories. In this book she describes her own story and how she found her way out of addiction.
Also available as an audio book.
Gaby Guzek - Die Suchtlüge
Addiction is not a sign of a lack of willpower. In this book, Gaby Guzek shows how addiction mechanisms work. She explains how vitamin and nutrient deficiencies promote addiction and how a healthy diet can help maintain abstinence.
Claire Pooley - The sober diaries
Mama needs a glass of wine! In her autobiography, Claire Pooley describes her journey out of addiction. She presents a serious topic in a humorous way - and does so extremely well. Light, informative and entertaining. Also available in English and as an audio book.
Mia Gatow - Rausch und Klarheit
She wanted to be a rebel, only to discover that excessive alcohol consumption is part of the absolute mainstream. In her biography, Mia Gatow describes how she went from the firm belief that intoxication is part of a freedom-loving life to the realization that nothing is as beautiful as clarity of mind. Also available as an audio book.
David Nutt - Drink?
David Nutt is a British psychiatrist and pharmacologist who, as an advisor to the British government, spoke uncomfortable truths early on that no one wanted to hear: of all drugs, alcohol causes the most damage to our society. He soon lost his advisory post. But he continued researching anyway. In this book, he provides scientifically sound information about all the risks and consequences of alcohol. Unfortunately only in English, but also available as an audio book.
Catherine Gray - The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober
There is life after addiction - and it's a beautiful life! Catherine Gray drinks now and then, then more and more, until alcohol becomes a permanent part of her life. But she manages to turn things around and is overwhelmed by the possibilities that open up to her. Her book goes far beyond funny drunken stories: she talks to scientists and psychologists about why we drink, what we do to ourselves when we drink, and how we can successfully quit. Also available in English and as an audio book.
Simon Borowiak - ALK
Humor is when you laugh anyway! True to the motto that life is already "dead serious" enough, Simon Borowiak vividly describes the stages of addiction development, the completely normal madness in therapy and his way out of addiction. Biting, ironic and hilarious. Also available as an audio book.
Mimi Fiedler - Trinkerbelle
Trauma and alcohol addiction, but the facade holds. – Mimi Fiedler, who described herself as the Bree Van de Kamp of the celebrity scene, describes the story of her addiction and her way out of dependency in strong words and without sugarcoating. A book that won't leave you cold. Also available as an audio book.
